One of the first questions I get asked when people find out that I am a pawnbroker is “What is the coolest thing you have ever loaned on?”. Surprisingly enough that question can be really difficult to answer. To me seeing an antique sword from WWI with a bullet hole through it easily tops my list, but to people who aren’t history buffs that might not seem that interesting. If you are interested in autographs you just might find a guitar that is autographed by the Rolling Stones the coolest thing hanging on our wall. The coolest thing definitely depends on the types of things that you are interested in. I have always felt that learning the history behind an item where it has been and where it will go is the coolest part of the job. Over the years I have learned so much information about so many different items. One of the things that I learned most recently is that the old marbles I used to play with as a kid are now collectable. I was so surprised to learn that some of the larger ones are worth hundreds of dollars. I was shocked! Not knowing what neat antique or odd tool will walk through the door that day is what keeps pawnbrokers going to work every day. I think that is what made the TV show pawn stars such a huge success. It answered the “coolest item” question in every episode. We might not be as cool as a TV show but, if you are every out and about and need somewhere to go spend some time come in to Big Dog Pawn and ask us what the coolest thing we have seen that week is.
